Footie
Welcome to Wrexham (FX/Hulu). In case you missed it, Wags Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds bought Wrexham AFC, a Welsh football club on the brink. Season Two of their doc series returns us to Wales. The team’s fortunes are still iffy, but they’ve come global darlings. The real stars of the show aren’t glossy Hollywood types but the people of Wrexham, who are impossible not to root for.
Most Unfortunate Accidents
Wilderness (Amazon Prime). What are we to make of all these books and shows about wives whacking their husbands? The dirty dog always deserves it! Liv and Will (Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohen) have it all: twee names, dewy complexions, and heaps of dough. Which means they are doomed. Will’s a cheater, and Jenna is not letting it slide. Of course, she’d like to go cliff-walking at the Grand Canyon! Yes, that’s Taylor Swift singing “Look What You Made Me Do?” on the soundtrack. Not exactly Bad Sisters, but those precipices are gorgeous. — Grace Williams
Girl, Interrupted
Donyale Luna: Supermodel (Max). The former Peggy Ann Freeman of Detroit was, in her own assessment, a weirdo. She spoke in an invented accent and when asked where she was from, replied, “The moon.” Otherworldly beauty transformed her into Donyale Luna, the first Black supermodel. A fixture in Swinging London, she collaborated with Andy Warhol and was also a compelling actress in films such as Fellini Satyricon. Luna died of a heroin overdose at only 33; this doc gives her the recognition she deserves. — Tracy Chambers
Proper Piss-Up
The Morning Show (Apple TV+). Is The Morning Show a serious drama about the dire state of TV news? No. The Morning Show is a soap opera where reporters are launched into space, Elon Musk looks like John Hamm, and people say things like, “It’s refreshing to get stabbed in the stomach instead of the back, so thanks.” You can give a line like that to Billy Crudup and it will work. An acting dream team that also includes Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Julianna Margulies, Mark Duplass, Greta Lee, and Karen Pittman effortlessly keeps your pesky mind off such implausibilities. So, thanks! — Aaron Altman
