Angie Venezia’s Glorious Things
We love to ask a brilliant member of the literati for three gifts from the muses. And who better to tap than Angie Venezia, the genius behind the Home Cooking Diary Substack (your tastebuds beg you to subscribe), and owner of Golden Hour Books in Newburgh, NY? Angie delivers the best in publishing to the west side of the Hudson Valley. Drop by her oasis and buy, buy, buy. Just look at how luminous it is:
1. See Also. This podcast out of Australia is hosted by two wickedly smart and funny women—Kate Jinx and Brodie Lancaster—whose conversations about life and popular culture I could listen in on all day. I regularly feel grateful I still have some older episodes to listen to when I’m up to date.
2. Better than Sane: Tales from a Dangling Girl by Alison Rose (Nonpareil Books). Writer Porochista Khakpour recommended this memoir to me (she wrote the introduction). We're now stocking it in our bookstore. Rose became a writer at The New Yorker, by way of secretarial work, in her forties. This is the story of her life and I bet you can't put it down.
3. Sourdough Starter. I know I'm late to the party, but a sourdough starter has come into my life (I've named her Stella) and the ritual of caring for the starter and feeding it is quite therapeutic. It's fascinating to observe it growing, and it lends itself to so many different uses. I've made a loaf of sourdough, but I'm also having fun experimenting with uses for the discard—like savory, herby pancakes or blueberry muffins. My next project is going to be a loaf with chocolate chips.
