Nothing Sacred
Wag believes that Golden Age screwball comedy is soul-healing balm. If those who came before you found laughter during the Great Depression and the Rise of Fascism (Part One), you can go prospecting for it, too. Appreciate a lesser-known gem that we love: William Wellman’s Nothing Sacred (1937). Carole Lombard is rubber-faced radiance as Hazel Flagg, who may not actually have lethal radium poisoning, and Frederic March is the reporter who makes her a tabloid star. It’s cynical, madcap joy. Plus, you can watch the entire, in-color Selznick romp on YouTube. —Natty Bumppo
