Hacks and Gossip Girl
Wodder are you watching? That's how it would sound on HBO's spellbinding Mare of Easttown. What can't Baroness Winslet do? Give you more than one Philadelphia-accented episode a week, clearly. So, here are some other things for the eyeballs.
SERIES: Hacks (HBO Max). "Write me 20 jokes before tomorrow morning, and nothing about pantyhose or the Challenger explosion. I've done 'em all!" There may be nothing funnier, or sadder, or truer, than this poison arrow aimed at the bleak heart of comedy, starring the incandescent Jean Smart as a Vegas headliner in need of a reboot, and the subversive Hannah Einbinder as her wiseass joke writer. Will they save one another? Will the headliner's wayward daughter (Kaitlin Olson) get her jewelry line on QVC? You will laugh, and more importantly, you will care.
PROPER PISS-UP: Gossip Girl (Netflix). Is calling somebody F. Scott Fitz-Jackass genius? Yes. Can you really have a secret cousin, who turns out not be your secret cousin, but a con lady from Florida named Ivy Dickens? Probably not. This much is true: there is always a masquerade ball being thrown on the Upper East Side, and it's going to go tits up. Binge all 2 billion episodes, and nominate Ms. Zuzanna Szadowski for just as many after-the-fact Emmys. —Lilah Krytsick
