Collective, The Mosquito Coast, and More!
This is Florence under the Medicis! Great art is being made all around you — a David here, a Birth of Venus there, a Doni Tondo to the left, all just hanging around the Uffizi that is your television. Don’t know where everything is? Consider us the plastic audio tour guide thingy you get at the front desk. Now you may wander around the gallery in confidence, stopping just where you like.
Doc: Collective (Hulu). A terrible nightclub fire, a team of intrepid reporters, and a shocking exposé of government corruption. This Oscar-nominated film takes place in Romania, but it may as well be Terre Haute. You can do subtitles for this investigative thriller.
Series: The Mosquito Coast (Apple TV +). Let’s pop off the grid with Dad, a charismatic maniac who invents futuristic machines and totally new identities for you and your kid brother. It’ll be fun, promise! Mr. Justin Theroux plays the wild-eyed anti-capitalist patriarch in this gripper based on the book by Uncle Paul. Not a bit like the 1986 Peter Weir movie, which is also grand. You’ll rethink that family road trip.
Proper Piss-Up: Escape to the Chateau (Peacock). British reality fixture Colonel Dick Strawbridge and his lady, the impetuously named Angel Adoree, purchase the decidedly unimproved Château de la Motte-Husson in France. There, they discover the glories of life as 19th century aristocrats, such as no plumbing and lethal draft (or draught!). The Euro Pit, with a new Hanks and Long. Amusez-vouz bien!
With Pippa and Huck: The Mitchells vs. The Machines (Netflix). Wag loathes algorithms, clickbait, and manipulative social media in all forms. Therefore, we endorse this subversive animated romp about a family battling an insidious A.I. army unleashed by a tech baron voiced by Eric André. The Mitchells include Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, and Maya Rudolph. How can you not love them, and Olivia Colman, too? —Gordy Howard
